I realize that most places have removed their mask mandates, but I’m still shocked by the number of people who go into public places maskless. Or, almost more stupidly, with their mask on their chin.

I get it. They’re a little annoying. They can be warm, they can cause your glasses to fog up. And for some people, they can make breathing a little more difficult.

But you know what’s worse? Covid. Even a mild case can be debilitating and have long-lasting impacts. And for people with chronic medical conditions, Covid is especially deadly.

Not wearing a mask indoors basically says that you don’t give a shit about even the most vulnerable people in society. Wearing one like a goddamn chin diaper says you don’t give a shit, but you want people to think you do, and that’s even more sinister.

Just do the bare fucking minimum - it’s not that hard. I don’t know where we got the idea that being an asshole is somehow a virtue, but it literally isn’t. Why should anyone give a shit about your potential minimal discomfort if you don’t give a shit about our literal lives?

@izzyamar For context, I'm as liberal as anyone you'll EVER meet. I mean, left of left and I took and take Covid seriously. With that said, I'll offer this...

Germs and SARS-CoV-2 in particular and their variants are very small and easily pass through what most folks wore as protective masks Like flies through a chain-link fence. Unless you're wearing certified N95 masks or actual respirators, you don't get very much protection from them.

What saved so many from death was "social distance" and staying home out of crowds where viral loads can be transmitted.

Offered with love and respect.

@bmerer Masks are definitely not the be-all, end-all solution, I agree. Social distancing is a big factor.

That said, there is medical research that proves that masks do have an impact (with N95s and respirators, as you mentioned, being the most effective) and using them properly is a simple way to at the very least, slow the spread.

And seeing as no one's even doing social distancing anymore, wearing masks is even more important.

I really appreciate your level-headed response, even though we disagree a bit on some of the finer details. That's another thing that seems to have disappeared with this pandemic - respectful, nuanced discourse online. It's so refreshing when it happens now :-)

@izzyamar
Why do you think vaccine isn't enough?

@Camel because there are a lot of people who either can’t or won’t get the vaccine. I’m immunocompromised so if I come in close contact with someone who’s infected but doesn’t know and isn’t wearing a mask (that’s how I ended up getting it) I could get it again. It was bad enough the first time and I’ve no desire to go through it again or to get someone else sick.
We also have differing data on how long the vaccine is effective for. And the vaccine is less effective against some strains. So wearing a mask still makes sense.

@izzyamar
Oh, so it is mostly your problem. I don't want to say that I nor the society should take care of you. We make ramps for people on wheelchairs, dotted tiles for blind people, etc. We as a society should apply vaccines to help people like you. But should you blame us when vaccines aren't good enough and we don't want to wear masks?
