@drahardja @kbg @mekkaokereke It was not the case anyway. You can comb through every single Confederate state's secession docs. You'll find "slavery" all over the place. "States rights?" Nowhere.
@Alan @drahardja @kbg @mekkaokereke This is true if you define "secession docs" as everything written about the secession debate at the time, but, unlike some others, the actual "ordinance of secession" for the state of Arkansas is a short, dry legal statement that doesn't specifically mention slavery or states rights. It doesn't say much more than "we're leaving."
I only mention this so that someone can't bring it up as a "gotcha" argument if you say all secession docs discuss slavery.
@Alan @drahardja @kbg @mekkaokereke Slavery and Secession in Arkansas by James J Gigantino II is an excellent resource for the debate that occurred in this state. It's a collection of primary sources, nearly all of which DO cite slavery as the reason to support secession. The actual Ordinance of Secession stands out a bit as one of the few that doesn't.
@fulminata @drahardja @kbg @mekkaokereke Then I stand corrected in my use of the word "all". Appreciated!
