@FediTips
Is there an android client where you can reverse the scroll direction?
It doesn't make sense seeing the very end of long posts first. Quite peculiar.
Thanks for the really helpful work.

not sam

@ianp5a @FediTips I don't understand the question. can you please rephrase?

@samiam @FediTips In the timeline/home, new posts arrive at the top and you scroll them downwards to see them. Older posts disappear off the bottom of the screen.
The requirement is an option to reverse this direction.

@ianp5a @FediTips you want new posts to appear at the bottom, and then to scroll up to read them?

note: I still don't think I understand, because this seems to contradict your first description, as far as I could understand it. I'm not trying to be difficult -- just trying to understand, and perhaps help others understand too. that said, if you find my questions annoying, feel free to tell me and/or stop trying to answer them. maybe someone else will respond in a more helpful way!

@samiam @FediTips
Yes, new posts appear at the bottom and you scroll them upwards to reveal and read more.

@ianp5a @FediTips on mobile, i can't tell if you've responded to an earlier comment while I am writing my next response! so there is a bit of cross-talk between our out of sync conversation. but I'm starting to think you're describing something that has also frequently frustrated me!

when you find part of a thread on your feed, it is often not the first part, and indeed generally is the last part. when you tap on it, you are taken to the full thread, but the end of it instead of the beginning. then you have to scroll all the way to the beginning to read it through chronologically.
an I getting close?
edit: I read your further exchange with feditips and it looks like I'm totally on the wrong track. I'm going to step back and read and think or maybe forget and move on to something else but at any rate I'll stop clogging up the fees for now

@ianp5a @FediTips I just read thru your exchange with feditips, which wasn't there yet when I started. I'm still confused 😅 but maybe getting closer!

so, you're scrolling along down, and at some point you see the last post in an extended thread, of which you haven't previously read the earlier posts? not ideal. you'd like the feed to handle extended threads differently so that you could more easily recognize them and start reading them from the beginning.
maybe?

@samiam @FediTips No the threads are OK. It's the main timeline that has the problem.

@ianp5a @samiam

Are you wanting the oldest posts to be at the top? With the newest posts at the bottom?

@ianp5a @FediTips @samiam in the Tusky app settings you can decide to have the timeline in chronological order (that is, oldest post first/up). That would solve your issues with the threads (but it'll apply to all posts)

@prex @FediTips @samiam
I've set the Oldest First option in Tusky 27.1, but it doesn't change the main timeline. Which is where the problem is.

@ianp5a huh what does it change then? I always use the newest first system, I just knew there was this option

@FediTips @samiam

@xuan @FediTips @samiam @pachli
Thanks but i don't get the 'Lab Experiments' in 2.9.1

@ianp5a
Preferences > Lab experiments (bottom) > Reverse timeline order

Isn't it there? I'm on 2.9.1 too.
@FediTips @samiam @pachli

@xuan @FediTips @samiam @pachli yes got it now and it works!
I'll have to see what happens when new posts come in now.

@xuan @FediTips @samiam @pachli hooray! finally solved one of mastodon's crazy deficits. The Pachli mobile client let's you set it to have new posts appear at the bottom of the timeline, where they scroll upwards. Just like a thread does. You read the top of a long post first. (I read top to bottom.)
Now all Mastodon needs is rich text, and groups, for it to start to have function over fashion.
