A common misconception, but you don't need to have watched Serial Experiments: Lain in order to understand how to use fedi
just turn fedi into federated tumblr tbh thats a way better model than twitter fuck twitter
There's a huge incestuous overlap between the online payments industry and the social media industry. Too much for it to be random correlation.
What do both industries have in common besides the Internet?
They both require intense analysis and management of personal data. With online payments, they want to know what will motivate clicking of the "Buy Now" button. With social media, they know what motivates a like, comment, subscription.
To them, personal data is a fine-tuned science.
New people to the #fediverse, particularly those who are academics or journalists:
know that unlike Twitter, almost all people here *do not* consent to having their posts quoted without prior permission.
Do not scrap a bunch of posts, or re-embed them in articles, without getting consent.
half life 2 except the intro sequence is just typical british railway station announcements:
- We regret to announce that the 1939 Combine Rail service to Nova Prospekt has been delayed by approximately 60 minutes due to headcrabs on the railway earlier today
- If you see something that doesn't look right, talk to a member of staff or Civil Protection, and we'll sort it. See it, say it, sorted
- From the 3rd to the 16th of July, engineering work will be taking place on the Nova Prospect line, and some services may be disrupted. Check before you travel.
Long post about the mastodon app
There's a load of really weird assumptions made in this too which suggest the author (which, incidentally, is Eugen) has never seriously used a small instance. I don't associate the local TL on this instance with local-instance-only exclusive posts that I just have to be here to see!! it's mostly just a way to see my neighbours' public posts. I don't restrict my posts to it, because most people I talk to are not here. The benefit of federation is that my friends are mostly elsewhere, and if I want to talk to them, I have to talk to them, right?
i think its great how over the multiple decades of computer science research and with billions of dollars spent, modern programmers have developed software so efficient and fast that it uses even less resources than before, runs better and has more features thanks to all the optimizations we have discov--
wait what do you mean having 3 chat apps and a music player open in background is using 5gb/40% of the laptops memory. just buy a macbook theyre not that expensive smh
lor.sh is yet another mastodon instance.
